Guest Review 2017

I, along with 2 girl friends, contacted Val to serve as our guide for our trip to the Lake District in late March of 2017.  Our primary reason for going is to see not only the Wordsworth literary haunts, but to see his beloved daffodils immortalized in the poem “Daffodils”.  This has been a quest for us since we read the poem during university days in the mid 1970’s. Forty years later, we decided it is time to fulfill the quest.

We chose Val becasue of her specialty in Lake District literary figures, notably Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.  Our challenge for her is to devise a one day itinerary for us to visit the Wordsworth daffodil sights that must include a car, as one of the friends has mobility issues. We asked to visit Aira Force, Dora Fields, as well as Dove Cottage, Rydal Mount, St Oswald’s Church, Beatrix Potter Gallery, Ullswater, etc.  To prepare us to fully enjoy the visit, Val gave us a long but well rounded reading list.

I must admit that I only got through 30% of the books on the list prior to the trip, but my goal is to finish the list. We did arrive in Keswick 2 days prior to the tour, and Val provided us with information and guidance to best use our time without her.

Val began our day with a visit to the ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle, followed by Grasmere- Dove Cottage & St. Oswald’s Church, Rydal Mount,  Dora Fields, Ullswater, etc. But the most memorable part of the day was the walks through the small villages, stopping to catch the views of Skkidaw Mountain, and the glorious hike to Aira Force (surrounded by daffodils) .

Val delivered on showing us the sights but her knowledge of literature, local people/customs, and area history added so much to our day. It was indeed the trip of a lifetime. Val also showed us an early bluebell, pointing out that bluebell season is late April-May. I shall return to see the Lake District covered not in golden daffodils, but in sapphire blue Bluebells. Val is a wonderful, warm person with incredible knowledge and insights to make anyone’s trip to the Lake District that “trip of a lifetime.’
